baking… homework… and vets

So Jacob became a eunuch this week. He went into the vet on Monday morning and came home on Tuesday morning. I’ve never experienced a cat act so completely normal after castration. Two-Tone and his late brother, Rexor, both acted a bit wobbly for a couple of days. Jacob came running out of the carrier like his bat-out-of-hell self and started playing and jumping around. He seems completely oblivious to his missing body parts. However, I’m keeping an eye on his stitches and they seem to be doing great.

I’ve been in a baking/cooking mood, lately. I made some banana bread the other night with some ripening bananas and turbinado sugar. It is less sweet, but it made a great loaf. The moisture released by this type of sugar made the baking time longer. I have to say it is some of the best banana bread I’ve ever made.

In garden news, I’ve pretty much neglected the fall planting due to the seemingly never-ending rain storms and being completely enmeshed with school. The poor fall garden beds look like jungles, but are still producing well. I ended up planting carrots, spinach, broccoli, and turnips. The carrots are still growing. The spinach is frost-bitten. The broccoli continues to persevere and I think we will have wonderful broccoli stalks soon. The turnips were planted for the greens, but with the rain and everything else, I just never got out there to cut them back. Now we have a half bed full of turnip roots. I picked some, yesterday, and cooked them for dinner, tonight. I basically just treated them like mashed potatoes because I’ve not done much cooking with turnips. I have to say that for being completely neglected and left to their own devices, they turned out delicious… and pretty.

Coming back to school after break was difficult. We had some crazy chaotic evacuation at UTC due to a bomb threat, today. It ended up being really anti-climactic - a good thing. There’s just over a month until the semester is over. I feel like it just began, but I am definitely not complaining.
